The new MUTCD was approved on December 16th 2009. Each state has 2 years to adopt the MUTCD or to publish its own supplement. To find out whether your state has adopted MUTCD and if there is a supplement available that is compliant with the MUTCD visit the FHWA website.
Following is a summary of some of the more applicable updates to the guidelines:
• Several changes were made to the minimum sizes of regulatory, warning, street and school signs. Some of the commonly sold signs that are affected are as follows:
Stop signs minimum 30” x 30”
Weight limit signs minimum 24” x 30”
Pedestrian and school advance signs minimum 30” x 30”
All W1-signs minimum 30” x 30” (turn left, turn right, curve signs, etc)
• Street signs and guide signs should have upper & lower case letters.
• 2 way, 4 way and 3 way plaques have been eliminated and replaced with All way plaques or other warning plaques.
• For custom or regular street signs the only approved colors are green, blue & brown with white letter colors. Black letters may be used on a white background.
• All crossing guards or law enforcement performing school crossings must wear Class 2 vests while performing their duties by Dec 31, 2011.
• All school signs (advance, crossing, etc) should be fluorescent yellow green.
• End School Zone signs are required at the end of the zone when the speed limit is lowered.
